Content is King! - Without a doubt the biggest and most important tip I would give anyone for being in Google is providing excellent quality information and content. Google loves content. Quality content. The Googlebot eats a ton of the stuff and if you provide high quality copy you will see a big difference when it comes to your ranking on the search engines. No matter what, pure high quality original content is the NUMBER ONE thing Original Content! - However, it's not just a case of finding some great article online and cutting and pasting it. That won't do you any good. You need to create continual content for your website. Good content. Keywords are important...but... - Very often when people start creating content for their website they over do things. For instance, this website is about internet marketing and of course those two words appear in the body of the text... but it's important not to repeat these about 10,000 times! Google is smart. Google will spot this and Google hates popunders and popups! - Around 5 years ago websites used to feature popups with great aplomb. Nowadays only "dodgy" websites tend to use these techniques to drive traffic. Avoid them. They are not liked. Google eats links - One of the lovely things about creating unique content, is people will link to your website and stories. After all, you are providing quality content. Why wouldn't they link to you? Natural linking is the key. Avoid link farms or anything that looks dangerous. Yes, you can create your own spam link by interlinking all your sites together at the bottom of every page, using a keyword link. Easy now! - When developing your website avoid the big expensive keywords such as Mesothliemoa. Be honest, are you really interested in providing content for that topic or to grab the big paying advertising links? Here is a hint - you won't get those big payouts! Hobby - probably one of the most important tips for creating website content is to do the website based on something you are interested in. Sounds obvious, but too many people see a high-paying category and then get bogged down and bored after they realise the big money is not pouring in... because it takes time, often years, before a website gains "respectability" from search engines and other websites. Porn and Gambling - Some people do enjoy both but unless you are into such things, avoid them. Avoid linking to them and carefully choose which websites you link to - often they appear as good quality sites but before you know it they have a hidden underbelly of bad neighborhoods waiting to pass along their bad page ranking. Social media - in 2011, it's important to communicate in a variety of ways, away from just the standard HTML webpage. Twitter is a great way to network with people and build contacts. Remember, you are often doing things for the good of the web Don't obsess - When it comes to advertising it's important not to spend all your time checking your stats... in the time you could be building new and interesting content Don't give up - It takes time to create good content and to build a reputation on the Internet. Don't give up too quickly in building what your business. You might strike gold on your first attempt but allow yourself to build success over time. Time is money - Give it a good go. Invest in at least a years worth of work in your new project. Don't give up too early. But do be aware that if you are unable to generate enough traffic or revenue for your site - and unless it's a subject you are deeply passionate about - there is no shame to starting again. A domain costs less than $10 so it is well worth it |
